I have a 1908 lath and plaster ceiling.

A loft fitter came round and said that it would be no problem to install a loft hatch to access the ceiling void.

However, I've heard this is near-impossible to do without destroying the ceiling. Does anyone have any stories of success/failure?

Why would it destroy anything? Just saw through it. Some plaster will chip off round the edges, but that can be filled or covered with architrave.

Yes did it in my first house no problem. nice sharp padsaw and architrave to trim.
