But why would you lot care about an ordinary hard working member of society, it doesn't get you any virtue signalling points

It's about the ability to afford legal defence advice, not about the merit of the charge, that determines who gets legal aid.

Nor does it matter how much or how little you have 'paid into the system'.
It's also very limited for some immigration offences. It's not a blanket award for all immigration offences.
