Does Tanking Reduce Maximum Tile/Adhesive on any substrate?

I have read several posts on tanking including gcol's sticky and remain a bit confused..

My question is, if I use a BAL or Dunlop tanking product on Plasterboard or Aquapanel, Wedi, Marmox, Hardi etc... will the maximum weight bearing for the substrate be reduced to a lower value than the un-tanked substrate?

I want to put up large format porcelain tiles 300mm*600mm and by the time I use a Single Part Flex adhesive the weight will be very close to 32kg sq/m. I had planned to use 20mm Marmox boards on the walls which can carry large weights on their own ~50kg if the correct adhesive is used, but I don't want to compromise the project if the tanking reduces this maximum.

I'd be particulary interested in gcol & Jasonb's comments.

Thanks

Tanked aqua panel will only take 32Kg/m2, likely to be the same with most of the tilebacker boards with the possible exception of Wedi.

Jason.

Thanks Jason.

I contacted Marmox Technical dept today and they questioned why I wanted to use a Tanking product on their board as it is already waterproof and would not be compromised by moisture.

He went on to say that if the board was tanked, he would think the maximum carrying weight would indeed be reduced.

I guess the same is true for Wedi as they are similar products.

So.... i think I will use Marmox board so that it will take the weight of the large tiles, but I won't tank the wet areas  . I'll silicon the joints in the boards when assembling and then tape/tank just the corners & board joints with the Dunlop kit I've bought.

Even after typing the above I don't know how comfortable I am with not tanking the whole wet area especially after reading all the advice on this top forum.... I wonder how Pilote Pete's Project Wet room tiles are getting on after he tanked his Wedi board...

Confused...
