Domestic 3 way switching

So they've screwed up because they didn't know enough about what they were doing, which is fair enough - people can unexpectedly get out of their depth, it happens.

But then they look someone in the eye and lie to them, and they think that makes them look better?

What a dreadful thing to do.
Yes they do, the bloke that never made a mistake never made owt.
A mistake is evidence that someone has tried to do something.
.
No one never made a mistake.

Mistake should be rare (each man should know his limitations as Clint said).

always read instructions even though you think you know - Donald Rumsfeld had something to say on that one.

But yes we all make mistakes, admit it, say what you tried to achieve and it might just shorten the investigation and correction process sometime.

Not many will berate you and not by much anyway - usually (Except that fellow who cut a Frogs back legs off to prove his theory!)

In this instance the diagnosis was quite simple, the LAP switch stood out like an artic in a carpark and I found the choc block with the 2 reds twisted together. I nearly didn't open the other 2 switches but not wanting to look a richardhead I did check them before confirming the problem.

I've had lying from customers loads of times.

Trying to get repairs under the terms of the maintenance contract.

One obvious one was a three gang switch where everything was effed up completely.

It was quite plain the switch was brand new yet she swore blind to my face that it had been "like that for the last few days."

Yes it's quite a common reaction when they get out of their depth, I've had a few who have been honest and explained they tried and failed. It doesn't make the diagnosis any easier but it doesn't generate the bitter taste.

The other fairly common thing is decorators saying they'll replace accessories as part of the job and that often ends badly for them. One of those was 2 * 2way & 2 * intermediate in a 4 module plate with something like a dozen cables, one of those where the heavy stomach feeling starts the instant the eyes see the problem.

She wouldn't have known about Live CDs. I honestly couldn't work out what she did. I used a live linux CD to look at the drive- that was when I discovered that C:\WINDOWS directory was missing. First time I had come across that.
In the early days, on my first PC, I somehow managed to do the same thing and had to return it to get a fresh Windows installation.

The seller, a large one at the time, couldn't understand it and didn't blame me, as it should have been impossible for me to do accidentally.
