Dot and dab - why?

You fix through the tile into whatever is behind it, ie plasterboard/studs or masonary.
You’d have the same issue whether or not the tiles were dot and dabbed

You'll need to use a fixing that bridges the gap between the tile and the block work.

Laziness or just poor workmanship..
How do you know he’s got dot and dab walls?
And I’m not sure it’s strictly true that he’ll “need” to use those expensive fixings
