downlight distance from joist

I know the maker of the downlight gives you recommended distances but if in reality this cant be done what would you say is the minimum distance for a downlight with 11w LED to be from a joist

Surely the manufacturer states, not merely recommends, a minimum distance.

If you can not achieve the manufacturers clearances from joists the you don't fit a light at all.
