The downlights i was looking at buying, says the minimum distance to a joist is 50mm. If i was to buy a downlight fire hood could i put the downlight closer to a joist?
thanks

No.

Fire hoods prevent the spread of fire through a fire rated ceiling. They do not prevent downlighters setting fire to joists which they have been installed too close to.

Thanks rf
So where it states 50 mm min is this from the edge of the main body on the light or any part of the light, hope that makes sense, cos i dont understand it.
thanks

it seems like your determined to install that downlight too close to a joist .

...R.f has provided the correct advice !

There is usually an installation diagram on or in the box, detailing the minimum clearances all round.
