G4 fitting

Ok on my daughters pc they look like the type with G4 type lamps and if they are the ones I think they are, we have these at work though ours have glass fronts not plastic and they are used sideways like a wall light rather than upside down so maybe why they are melting?

thanks for the replies.

the screw in cap finish is plastic the clear round window is glass, it is the actual ceramic holder that has gone from a grey to a burnt brown/black and this part is coming apart and then the light malfunctions and does not work at all.

Use quality surface mounted individual units with either 10W or 20W capsules (bulbs) and hide the transformer(s) on top of the cupboards or use those pre-mounted within a strip with two, three or four lights again either 10W or 20W with the transformer within the casing. Metal casings will disperse the heat. Dont get the cheapest or you will get problems. Or use the triangular wedge shape ones that are popular these days - again 12v 10 or 20W.

All the above fittings are avaialble with CFL that give a good spread of light once warm but will take time to strike and heat up to full brightness.

LED's also available but checkout the light quality first - people either love em or hate em - at least they always run cold.

I think the problem is that down-lighters of every kind get very hot, that is your heat source. I don't think it is a very good idea to have down lighters anywhere, let alone under a cupboard.

How about replacing them with some lovely T4 fluorescent lamps, cheaper to run, last longer and don't get so hot!

That's an interseting one... I've just had my kitchen fitted and found that undercupboard downlighters were fitted in place of the chosen striplamp! When queried the fitter he said that 240v can never be positioned above any water vicinity ie the sink, like in my case! healthy ans saftey guys ... :?
