Probably just putting them back incorrectly .
There are probably different systems out there, but the down lighters I've fitted have metal levers that are sprung and need to be in the correct position (flush) before I push it through the ceiling, and then as the downlight gets close to the surface, the levers push against the topside of the ceiling, holding them in place.
If they came out okay, there must be a way of getting them back in! Good luck
