downloading music

I would be very very careful when downloading music, stick to the established sites with a decent name...and avoid the free ones if you can..

You run the risk of getting all sorts of c*rap unto your computer trojans spyware etc...

But worst of all...illigal porn..very illigal and very nasty porn...you download a music track and with it can come images...and you wont even know they are there..but PC W orld will and so will other computer repairers who know where to look and how to look for it.

Enter the old bill into the equation..

Share sites are rife with it...and two of the worst artists for having 'hidden extras' are Eminem and Britney

They are placed into files that come down with the software that you use to download.

Be warned.

thanks for that.
I'll avoid the music sites as I just dont know enough about this.
I sometimes get a thing popping up from AOL about spyware but I ignore it as Ive been told at work that you cant get AOL off your computer.

I think I will get a pal from work to come and look at my computer and get it up to date if it isnt with safe guards.
My kids play games on the internet and I have no idea if we are getting 'other stuff' at the same time.

Avoid Limewire like the plague Toffee...its one of the worst.

we ( thats me and my extended family) use limewire - Limewire.com they did do a free version which was very good but I paid for the upgrade to limewire pro. Not only music but almost any conceivable program for your computer, full length films, tv series etc etc. do a search for it on LW and it'll be found most likely.

be wary though have good virus protection and scan everything before its opened, it does slow the computer down when its on so all our downloading is done overnight. In the main no probs at all with music and I've not had anyone knock on my door yet!

I use limewire free version and it seems fine, but I usually do a spyware scan after using it.

Do you know, I am so tempted to tell you about dressing up in a long coat and hat, hiding behind a newspaper with holes cut out for eyes and then scanning your house for bugs but I realise that this would be a really childish and cheap joke and so I will desist from doing this and let one of the people who know about computer things answer you instead.

   hermes...(I have this mental picture now ...)

me thinks you like dressing up a little too much

how do you do a spy ware scan
download adaware from the link I posted above, its dead easy to use, just intall and run. When you run it, click "check for updates" click to download nay updates, then next, then select "full scan" then next, when its done, select all obects, then next, agree to remove them, then thats about it.

Just an aside going back to the original query, Woolworths have a massive download catalogue for 59p a track. I use it and its very good. the only downside is that all tracks are wma with drm which is an absolute pain if like me you have an ipod. it means I have to burn tracks to cd and then rip them to mp3 or aac. (unless anyone knows any way around this?)

I'd rather buy CD's to add to my library, its nice buying them and opening the box and playing them for the first time and then making a nice little space for them among the other's, its like a religous thang! you da man! xx:cool: Jaz nice!
