aaahhhh take care, yes it will come off and the valve will suddenly magically release itself ( i assume it is tight) and you will get wet.
hold against the valve to ensure you do not wrack (is this a real word
) and then loosen the bottom nut a bit gently tap the valve body up and you should find it turns easily and the cylinder will drain, it might drip a bit but dont worry, when drained turn off valve and tighten nut when filled check for leaks
one for all the non plumbers while doing this, when reading this i remembered a spark years ago flooded a house, he turned the drain valve (assumed the cylinder was draining, BIG mistake
) went to van got new immersor, back in, finished cuppa then nipped outside to check drain valve had stopped running, a few drips of water were coming out so he thought luvvly jubbly, and disconnected the side entry (obviously) immersor only to get completely drenched, couldnt get the immersor back in so had to stand back and let it flood, turns out someone had jammed small pebbles into the sludge pipe which stopped the water draining, so the moral is, when you open a drain valve go out and check it is running full bore, then go back and check it has stopped, oh how we laughed
