I will be moving my boiler into an extension and would like to hide the pipes in the ceiling void which would involve drilling through the metal lintel to pass 4 x 22mm pipes. Is this permitted? The lintel spans a 3.0m gap with good support at each end.
Thanks, no gas pipes, just water going through. Unfortunately my Viessmann boiler has separate 22mm in/out CH & DHW pipes which would look very ugly elsewhere. I'll check with the architect.
Yes, Catnics are suitable, but it's unlikely the manufacturer would approve drilling holes in them because they are fabricated from thin steel sheet.
In practice, if using ordinary hot-rolled steel beams, you would be looking at something like 7"x4" beams; drilling holes in the webs of those will not be a problem structurally.
