I will be moving my boiler into an extension and would like to hide the pipes in the ceiling void which would involve drilling through the metal lintel to pass 4 x 22mm pipes. Is this permitted? The lintel spans a 3.0m gap with good support at each end.

Is it a standard 'I' beam? If so, what overall depth?
Or is it a manufactured box-beam?

Thanks. We haven't started building yet, on the plan it says: "Check cavity width. Catnic CG70/100 or similar."

If you know you'll need holes in it then your SE will be able to factor that into the design so that it is still strong enough.

Check the gas regs about gas pipes in voids - I have a feeling that's not allowed.

Thanks, no gas pipes, just water going through. Unfortunately my Viessmann boiler has separate 22mm in/out CH & DHW pipes which would look very ugly elsewhere. I'll check with the architect.

I assume SE is Structural Engineer, who, as far as I am aware, has not been consulted. Will one be required for building Regs approval?

Not necessarily for a 3m span, unless your building control officer is more stupid than they normally are.

He will say 'check with the SE' and the SE will say 'er, no' just to cover himself.
Well how about, instead of asking him "can I drill 4 25mm holes in a Catnic CG70/100 or similar?", ask him to design a beam which will do the job?

Yes, Catnics are suitable, but it's unlikely the manufacturer would approve drilling holes in them because they are fabricated from thin steel sheet.

In practice, if using ordinary hot-rolled steel beams, you would be looking at something like 7"x4" beams; drilling holes in the webs of those will not be a problem structurally.

Are the Catnic type not suitable for this job then?
With 4 big holes drilled through it?

IANASE, but I doubt it - they'll be designed to do the job using the bare minimum of materials, and would probably be weakened too much if cut into.

Might be needed for a 3m span if there are going to be holes drilled in a proprietary lintel?
