What should I use for this?
In the past I have used Bosch spade bits (with the thread on the tip) with my cordless drill.

Please advise the best approach please.
Thanks

It depends. Are you asking for the best drill bit or are you asking where to drill joists?

Armeg Wood Beavers are very quick through joists/studs/etc, and these particular ones being the stubby version, are handy for tight spaces...

...but you do need a cordless drill with a good old amount of torque for the larger sizes.

I find the Bosch flat bits with the threaded tip, as you mentioned, to be the best.

If you can get an angled drill, you will get the best results.
