how long should you wait after tiling before you can drill holes through the tiles, i need to hang rads, fittings etc up?

Until the adhesive has gone off, of course.

Which adhesive, how thick a bed, what type of backing, what type of tile?

Depends on the adhesive and the substrate. If tiling onto most general substrates using a pre-mixed adhesive, then you should wait 24 hours. If you have use pre-mixed adhesive over a previously tiled wall or over a tanked wall, then you should wait 72 hours.
If you have used a general powdered adhesive, then generally 12 hours will suffice or 3 hrs for a rapid-setting adhesive.
These are the same times that you should wait before grouting also.
