I need to lift an inspection chamber cover to clear a blockage in the drain. The cover is a Peter Savage galvanised tray type. I have removed the blocks from the tray to reduce the weight and removed as much sand from between frame and tray as possible. The tray has probably been undisturbed since installation some 17 years ago.

It refuses to move. Any suggestions on what I might try next?

Thanks

Normally there are a couple of slots for standard manhole keys to fit but if there is anything to grip then try some locking pliers with a stout screwdriver.

I had a quick look at the Peter Savage web site and the covers seem to have lifting points in each corner. Put two manhole keys in on opposite corners, put a length of timber, (or steel), through the handles. Build up a pile of bricks or similar under one end of the timber then use a car jack under the other end. Just do it gently lifting each corner a little until it is loose. Do not lift one corner too much as it will jam, it needs a little at a time.

A jet wash is useful to blast dirt and jointing sand from between the frame and the lid.

If it really wont shift you can hire a specialist lifter from hss or similar.
