i need to put a larger piece of worktop next to a smaller piece in my utility room upgrade. Will the join show or should we just buy a new piece which is long enough.

It'll very much depend on you skills with a router (to get a good edge and clamp holes), and whether the old one has discolored with the light.
One piece will look better and may be stronger .
