I have had the gas inspection done on the house I rent out. The inspector has failed it on the hob not working properly, (now fixed) and also no earth bonding to gas pipe.

Is this an easy fix for a,(I think) competent DIYer or do I have to get somebody in?

New tenants are moving in very soon and cant afford a delay in them moving in as totally out of available money for this project.

Many Thanks

You will need to run a 10mm² green and yellow wire from the consumer unit (or near incoming supply) to the gas meter.

First check that there isn't such a wire next to the gas meter.
Plumber may be referring to bonding on the pipes below the boiler which they are fond of but which actually aren't usually needed.

Really apreciate that, if there is no bonding at the gas meter, is it ok to run this earth around the outside of the house? I know it may look ugly but consumer unit/electrical entry point is one side and then gas pipe is the other side.

Does the gas pipe entering the boiler inside the house needing a bonding point on it, cos I can see nothing on it, it simply comes through the wall and a tight 90' bend into the boiler

Cheers

It runs from the wall mounted white meter box on the side of the house along the outside of the wall, up into the downstairs toilet where the boiler is mounted and then along the wall further to the rear of the house to the gas hob in the kitchen

You may connect the bonding cable where the pipe enters the building.

Would that be easier to install from the CU or incoming service?

As I understand it then.

1. Run 10mm earth from earth point which is screwed to the wall just outside the CU.
2. Drill thru wall and run outside from one side of porch to the other.
3. Connect to gas pipe prior to any Tee's and preferably within 600mm of my side of the meter.

Does this sound right, can the cable just be nailed clipped in place.
Will it pee of the gas safety guy if I DIY it? am i just making a rod for my own back and am I just better off letting him quote for it?

Cheers

That ought to be OK, and should satisfy the gas safety guy. However,as EFLI pointed out, if the gas pipe from the meter runs along the outside wall of the house before entering the house, it should also be acceptable to connect the bonding wire close to where it enters the house (inside or outside), if that is more convenient and makes the job easier.

Kind Regards, John.

Check the gas hasn't been bonded somewhere else first.

Plumbers/gas fitters only expect to see the earth clamp at the gas meter and nowhere else because they are a bit thick sometimes.

Chances are if the gas is not earthed then nor is the water, and any other services you may have, so have a look at the stop cock.
