My son has just moved into an old house where the gas pipe is not bonded. CU is at the back of the house and very old. So old what earth wires there are are twisted together only. Needless to say when alterations are done a full rewire takes place. In the meantime can I bond the incoming gas with 10mm using a earth rod.

You need to run a 10mm earth conductor from a point no more than 600mm on the house side of the gas stop cock to the earth terminal at the consumer unit.
The same for the water service, you do not connect the gas main to an earth spike, that would be pointless, the gas pipe is metal and is in the ground!

The purpose of main bonding is to ensure that all pipe services are at the same potential. See here http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Book/5.4.3.htm

 This is what happens when people who don't know what they are talking about interchangeably use the terms earthing and bonding - it just ends up confusing anyone who comes here looking for advice.*

AS TTC has stated, bonding to the main earth terminal serves a totally different purpose to earthing. You are not trying to create a path for fault current when you bond the water/gas/oil pipes, you are making sure they stay at roughly the same potential.

Earthing is there to provide the path for fault current and you need both of these things to be done correctly to have a safe and compliant installation.

*BTW, that wasn't a rant at you roball, but at other 'professionals' who don't use the correct terminology and end up confusing DIY'ers like yourself.

No.

Bonding is to connect all pipework etc to the MET (Main Earthing Terminal) to ensure that it is all at the same potential as the earth of your electrical system.
This potential may be substantially different to the earth beneath your feet just outside the property.

By adding an earth rod to the gas pipe you could be making the siutuation worse
