earthing a gas meter

It will depend if the cupboard gives you a low enough resistance to earth, I personally would connect in some way to the mass of earth.

There used to be a earth wire on the gas pipe but was only thin wire the gas company put new meter in but cut wire off and left a card saying I need a electrician ken m

You need to run 10mm ² earth cable from an earth clamp located on consumer's side of the meter as close to the meter as reasonably possible - to the main earth terminal which should be next to your consumer unit/electric meter.

Thank you for your reply the gas meter is in a cupboard at the front of the house and the electric meter at the back of the house ken m

Quite a common problem - but I'm afraid that it doesn't alter what riveralt says about what is required.

Edit:The point which no-one has made, which may help you to understand is this - the gas pipe does not need 'earthing' (if it did, a local earth rod like you suggested would be OK). Rather it needs to be connected to the Main Earthing Terminal of your electrical installation in order to ensure that dangerous differences in voltage cannot exist beyween the two(what electricians call 'bonding', not 'earthing) .

Kind Regards, John

You need to run a 10mm² bonding cable from the front of the house to the back then.

So we are talking about bonding the gas pipes, not installing an earth electrode?
You will (rule of thumb) require to update the bonding conductor to 10mm ²
Ideally you need to connect this from the MET or earth busbar of the consumer unit, to a point as near as practicable to the incoming gas supply but after the gas meter.
The connection to the gas pipework needs to be made by an earth clamp complying to BS951 and this connection must be made in a location that is easily accessible for maintenance, inspecting and testing.
It may also be that the bonding to the water supply will need updating to.

Depending on the earthing method of the installation the present bonding conductor may be satisfactory and merely needs to be reconnected.

Which will be the best option initially until a larger cable, is required, is installed.

Some bonding is better than non!

Not necessarily, though.

Depending on the earthing method of the installation the present bonding conductor may be satisfactory and merely needs to be reconnected.

If we are getting picky, what would be necessary, if reconnection was to be made, which I do agree would be wise even as temp measure, is that the connection is verified!
