I am sprucing up the front garden with pieces of slate chippings. My idea was to just lay them on top of the excisting patio. The only problem/ advice i require is how to lay the border which will keep the chippings off the main pathway? Is it ok to cement them straight on to the excisting patio? If not, what would be the best way?
Any advice would be much appreciated.

you wont be able to moratr them on. Best way to do it is to create some sort of raised edge to keep the chippings on. You can do this with brickwork, or timber edgings, concrete edgings etc. Anything less than about 75mm deep and it will be too shallow and youll see the patio through the holes underneath.

Sorry thermo, not sure what you mean exactly, what holes would you see the patio through. Wooden edges fixed how? sorry to be a bit stupid

Thanks thermo, i think my first message did'nt explain what my idea was.
It was to lay concreted edging as the border, i was hoping to find out would it be ok to mortar them straight onto the patio

you are best whittling out a small trough where the soil meets the patio and lay an edging in this trough.

a pro' would not lay an edging straight onto the slabs/paving/concrete etc.

ah sorry, i though tyou were laying the chippings over the old patio to spruce it up, didnt realkise you meant laying the edging on the patio!
