Hello,

I am re-fitting my kitchen. Currenlty I have a free standing gas cooker and would like to replace it with an eletric ove/gas hob. The only connections at the back are from the gas supply so I'm assuming I have to get some-one to put in the electrics.

Should I do this when the kitchen is ripped out but beofre installing the cabinets (I guess yes?). Does anyone know how much this kind of work should cost?

thanks

w00t no moderators have been and spanked you for asking for a price yet.

The advice of the forum is always to get a few quotes.

But the spirit of the forum is to do it yourself if you feel confident

Your choice.

If you are having your kitchen refitted this is the ideal time to put in a new Cooker Circuit.

Although a gas hob/single electric oven COULD usually be run off a 13A socket, you will save yourself a lot of future trouble and expense if you go straight to having a bigger circuit run, in 10mm with a 45A switch. This will be sufficient for a great big electric cooker if you, or the next resident, decides to get one. you can have it fused down to 16A for the current dual-fuel cooker, or you could have a 13A socket fitted to the outlet in the wall. Apart from the fact that the heavier cable is more expensive, and thicker and stiffer so more difficult to terminate, the labour and time will be similar.

Electrical work in a kitchen is Notifiable, so is the addition of a new circuit, so you would be best advised to ask around friends and neighbours for a recommended local electrician, and confirm before asking hin in for a quote that he is a member of a self-certification scheme and will issue the documentation for you.
