Electric cut off by council

I had a shower installed the electrician ran off cooker supply as i dont use it council came round to do check cut it of as unsafe is this right with thanks

Possibly. What is the rating of the shower? What cable is used? What MCB? How long is the cable run and what route does it take?

Did the council say that was the reason? More likely a lack of sup bonding or no RCD - Although an RCD is not required by the regs, the council guys always look for one and question if not fitted.

No rcd fitted the reason on form was that it has to be from meter with no breaks in it?

That isn't a regulation, but it is good practice on circuits feeding such power hungry appliances.

How was the cable extended?

"ran off the cooker supply" is enough for me to condemn it. That probably means it is 4 or 6 mil on a 30A CPD, not to say several unnecessary joints.

Most shower mfrs specify an RCD and isn't there something in the regs to say that manufacturers installation requirements must be met?


I guess the shower must be 8.5kW or above...

Afaik, the manufacturers instructions overrule the IEE regs.

That's what I've always been told, but it's strange that the lack of RCD protection wasn't noted on the form the OP was given.

I'm curious as to what method was used to join the cable that was more serious than lack of RCD protection.

RCD is only required if the manufacturer specifies it.
If the manufacturer just specifies work to BS7671 then strangely RCD protection is not currently a requirement.
