Electrician taking on unfinished work, easy or not?

hi all

I appreciate its possibly very difficult to answer but an electrician whom I've used for years and has always been good to us was wiring my new extension has stopped communicating with me and left the job unfinished.

It was an unusual job insomuch that it wasn't a first fix then Second fix scenario as the way I'm building the extension required the electrics to be completed in sections.

The majority and major part of the work is done and I have paid him everything I owe to date but he's just no longer answering my calls or returning messages and it is extremely frustrating.


Is it possible to pick up where he has left off with another electrician?

I won't go into too much detail as it long winded but can anyone answer the question or if you need more info I'm happy to answer

Probably depends on why the electrician has 'left'.

I suppose it really depends on what is left to do, what he's done that needs finishing off, what state of the build you're at etc.

If you've done it room by room say, and he's first and 2nd fixed 2/3 rooms and there's just one or two room(s) left to 1st and 2nd, then no real issue.

If he's done some first fix and there's second fix to do on that, then you may struggle a bit more, somebody will do it, but it's a bit of a sketchy area

Your guess is as good as mine! Maybe he's got a better earning job?

I will state that he was never great with being on time or answering the phone but eventually turned up a couple of hours late but he did turn up.


He was always moaning about his customers not paying him on time and always being owed money.

I always paid up to date and when asked, I owe him nothing, if anything he owes me money for work he hasn't done albeit it's not much.

I know nothing about electrics so cannot really explain well enough to help but

Rear extension is near complete but for -
Needs 2 spotlights fitting, wiring is in place
Light switches replacing to dimmers
Led strip lighting on to units
(Outside) LED security light put back up.

Bathroom
Plinth lighting

Front bedroom
Isolator plug connected/completed???

Once the rest of the work is don't then it's a matter of
Working plugs in garage (all wiring & socket boxes in place)
Wiring in lights (wires in place)

There's a few other little bits I may have missed but that is basically all and then obviously it needs to be signed off

The 'signing off' is the difficulty especially if the cables are concealed in the building and if calculations are not available. The new electrician is taking responsibility for the design and installation that has been done by the previous electrician.

So what do I do given the fact the electrician is being a bit of a Pratt??

Well, if the present one won't come back then you will have to find one who will carry on with the work.



What I meant by my previous post was that it is not unknown for a customer's behaviour to cause an electrician to leave.

And I can assure you Ive done nothing wrong other than be a good host a prompt payer and gave my dismay in a good manner when he continued to delay completing the work stating he was waiting for the lights to come into stock, 6 weeks +.

When asked for the make/model so that I could source them myself, he refused and that's the last I heard from him.

I will also state during the work, I have often sought & purchased parts he's recommended so trying to purchase the said lights I didn't feel was an issue!
