so the side of the cooker is directly in front of you as you walk through the open door?

that's probably not a good idea as it's easy for a tot to get hold of a hot pan or the burners from the side...

I know - but fortunately we don't have kids and it's not the kind of flat that would ever appeal to parents with young kids (up 3 flights of stairs and no garden).

Am trying to persuade the other half to move the hob in a bit so there's 30 cm work surface on the doorside but the argument made against it is that it reduces the only decent stretch of work surface we have ( just over 90cm in total) on the other side!

So I was just wondering what the regs said ....
