in my bathroom i have aceiling rose, there is power to the light fitment, when i turn the light on and off it recieves the 240v but it will not light up the blub....!
yes i have tried a different bulb. when i shake the fitment about the bulb flickers, or used to now it does nothing, this sugests to me that maybe a cable is broke, i have a tester but do not no how to test the wires any help would be greatful

What sort of tester are you using?

Where are you measuring the voltage - at the terminals of the fitting or inside it where the bulb makes contact?

The fact that wiggling it makes, or used to make, it flicker on and off sounds more like a dodgy fitting than a broken cable.

Some fittings use solid strand conductors that can fracture, but this can be eliminated by gently tugging on the connections.

its a brand new fitment (rose) and pull string....any thoughts now....?
i have a pen tester that you use your body for earth i have tested it at the rose and the pendant when i pull the switch cord it registers 240v and disappears when i pull it off

Throw it away.

Buy a proper multimeter.

Repeat the tests.

See if you really do have a supply getting there.

I would prefer not to use my body for earth. I would much rather use the correct equipment and let the earth cables do the earthing. I wonder why the main earth is a piece of cable with a csa of 16mm?

i have a multi meter but do not know how to use it what setting do i need it on and what wires do i touch to test please advise......

How much do you know about electricity?

Basic stuff like potential difference, current flow, resistance, the difference between (and relationships between) voltage, current and resistance?

wayne, if your neon screwdriver is lighting when you switch on and going out when you switch off, with the good lamp in see if the blue neutral side of your fitting also glows this would suggest a broken neutral connection. if it does glow take out the lamp if it stops glowing with the switch on its definitely a broken neutral
