Empty fireplace

Hello. I'm looking for ideas on how to turn an empty fireplace (rented accomodation, no chimney) into something more cosy. Thanks! The cheaper 'real effect' stoves are rubbish looking so I was thinking of trying something a bit more adventurous/artistic!

Went for this in the end (see pic). Trip to B&Q, some bricks, some wood, an iron grate and some fairy lights. Looks ok I recon?

It looks fine! I have a similar set up, but its an open grate with large candles in.
