Hi guys,

I have an old wooden floor covered with carpet. Want to replace the carpet with the engineered wooden floor.

Once I remove the carpet, what do I need to lay on top of the old wooden planks. Only underlay or anything else?

For best floated results, 4mm Ply the subfloor and float the Engineered over it although judging by your photo, it looks like you could float over the floorboards as they are with a GOOD quality underlay like Duralay Multitex/Timbermate XL.

If you decide to ply, it might be worth going 6mm SP101 Ply and Glueing the Engineered Wood to it which will give a more solid installation and marginally reduce installation height of the floor over 4mm Ply, Underlay, and the Engineered Wood.

I did mine on top of very similar looking floorboards (floating ) I used a good quality underlay without any extra ply underneath but I did go over the floor with a flat edge and planed out any high spots and repaired any floorboards that had previously been taken up for pipes,
