Except in matters of sex

You are conflating three separate ages.

The age of sexual maturity (which obviously varies for each individual), the age of consent, and the age of majority.

I agree there are 3 separate ages, but I'm not conflating them. Epstein's is sex case, and the law defines an age of consent. Which incidentally varies between countries and historical periods. I believe in Ireland until fairly recently it was 14 for girls and 18 for boys.
I'm not defending Epstein, I'm just objecting to the use of paedophile. In my opinion fiddling with sexually immature children is worse than consensual sex with someone sexually mature but below the age of consent. You may not agree.
If some on here define child as anybody below 18, or 16, or whatever, we'll have to agree to differ.

I'm still non the wiser on who she actually pimped these prostitutes to.
Surely that would be a major part of the prosecution case...
Who were the clients?
That's a very pertinent question for those involved

It's not some on here, It's the definition of a child, which is anyone under 18.
Is that your opinion or a legal definition? If the latter, in which jurisdictions? If you or somebody can show where the law (in UK for a start) says this, I'll accept it. But your assertion won't do.

Definitions of a child

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) defines a child as everyone under 18 unless, "under the law applicable to the child, majority is attained earlier".

England

In England, a child is defined as anyone who has not yet reached their 18th birthday. Child protection guidance points out that even if a child has reached 16 years of age and is:

  • living independently
  • in further education
  • a member of the armed forces
  • in hospital; or
  • in custody in the secure estate
they are still legally children and should be given the same protection and entitlements as any other child (Department for Education, 2023).

Northern Ireland

In Northern Ireland, The Children (Northern Ireland) Order 1995 defines a 'child' as a person under the age of 18.

Scotland

In Scotland, the definition of a child varies in different legal contexts, but statutory guidance which supports the Children and Young People (Scotland) Act 2014, includes all children and young people up to the age of 18.

Where a young person between the age of 16 and 18 requires support and protection, services will need to consider which legal framework best fits each persons’ needs and circumstances. The National guidance for child protection in Scotland gives more detail about this and explains how professionals should act to protect young people from harm in different circumstances (Scottish Government, 2023a).

Wales

Section 3 of the Social Services and Well-being (Wales) Act 2014 states that a child is a person who is aged under 18.

Definitions of a child
OK point taken!
But just curious, what does it mean in practice (apart from eg anonymity if suspected of a crime)?
What will happen if the voting age is reduced to 16?
Is it legal (in UK) to have sex with a 16 or 17 year old? as this thread is about Epstein's sex crimes.
