Just lost the use of rad. cooling fan on my mk6 escort ghia 16v zetec, causing the engine to overheat.

Does anyone know how to test or bypass the temperature switch at the source?

When disconnected from the switch, The loom end has 4 wires. The terminals are marked 1 to 5 with no connection to terminal 2.

If i bridge the switch at this point, surely this will activate the fan?

Not sure how to discover which of the connections will allow the fan to operate.

Note: If I disconnect the switch - the fan does not operate either, not sure if it should anyway.

Easiest way, connect one at a time using a single strand of 0.3 wire. Watch the fan and it will kick (before the wire melts) when you found the correct two wires. Ensure you use a light strand of wire as if you short out the circuit it must blow (melt) to save the loom.

As you only have 4 working connections you only have a few combinations.

1 to 3
1 to 4
Etc

Safer to get a working switch and just replace the suspect one?

my diagrams show that you need to bridge either 1 to 4 or 3 to 5. it looks like it has a dual speed system with a resistor in circuit and the switch is a double pole. The 2 wires on the diagram feeding the switch (should have 12v on them) are violet in colour.
There is also a dual relay for the fan which should be located behind the fascia and a 50 amp fuse (f4)

I cant guarantee 100% the accuracy of the diagrams.
