I have gone from an ESI Thermostat and trying to upgrade to v3+. I’ve added photos of the old one and the tado. When I set the heating to on nothing happens. I also have a thermostat upstairs I will need to change as it’s dual zone. Any help appreciated. Thanks

The ESI thermostats use 5V DC, the Tado requires 230V AC.

There is no compatibility between them. If you want to use the Tado then the ESI control PCB will need to be removed, a suitable wiring centre installed in it's place, the plugs on those zone valves cut off and the wiring for them and the new thermostats connected to the appropriate terminals in the wiring centre.

It does seem interesting, hunted for 5 volt motorised valves, and these do not seem to be very common, and looking at ESI it seems there are a lot of discontinued lines, so you may be forced if any fail to change the whole control method.

The general problem is 230 volt motorised valves tend to have built in micro switches, where the battery powered (3 volt) TRV heads rely on some hub doing the switching, the end result may be the same, but a completely different way of doing it.

In hindsight, and hindsight is easy, I made some errors, and in the main this was because it is so hard to find out what each system will do. In the end, I moved to Drayton Wiser, but have been left with an array of makes, of TRV heads, all of which work, and all with plus and minus points.

Today, we may need a mains powered motorised valve to control the DHW (domestic hot water), but the programmable TRV heads has rendered the zone valve for central heating redundant.

But we have such a mixture with independent hub, and hub built into thermostats, wireless and wired, each with plus and minus points, and one has to read so carefully to work out what each will do, it is not easy.

Personally I was limited as so hard to run new wires, so many systems would not work for be, as too hard to run new wires. My only complaint about the Wiser is it needs an emulator to run from my PC, works great with phone or tablet, but not the PC.

But if you say what you have, and if easy or hard to run new wires, and what your aims are, I am sure people on here will help.
