Hi all

This is my first post so please bear with me.

I have a double outside socket that was in the garden when we bought the house and from what I can tell it has been installed correctly (i.e. fused switch inside the house etc). I now have a shed and stables at the top of the garden and would like to have some power up there too, mainly just for lights when feeding the ponies but maybe the occasional radio or power tool, I currently have to get the extension lead out every night so was hoping to make things a bit more permanent, I therfore have a few questions.

1. The distance is about 15m so I was wondering if it is possible for me to just extend from the existing sockets using SWA cable and therefore avoiding any part p regs as I am just extending an existing circuit??

2. Are there and extension leads on the market that are designed to be left outside permanently (i.e. a SWA cable with a plug and socket on either end ???)

3. Any idea how much an electrician would charge for doing the job as if it is not too much then I would prefer to get it done professionally (I don't mind if the SWA cable is NOT buried)

Hi cookiemonsta, you really need to be looking at installting a new circuit for your shed and stables, even pushing the regs and safety to one side for a moment if your outside socket is on a swiched fuse spur on the inside of the house you'd be running your shed and stables on a 13a fuse, a light and small power tool may not blow the fuse but who knows what we get up to in our sheds.. a new circuit in SWA to and new small CU in the stables would set you up nicley for whatever projects arise in the future. as for your other question of an swa extention lead, i've never seen one and i really wouldn't want to be lugging something like that around all day either...lol. i know its not your preferred option to get a sparky in to sort it for you but i think in the long run you'll benefit from having a decent reliable supply local to your shed.

Any permenant install would have to take into account that the structure is used to house livestock. Earthing arrangements may need to alter. Not sure though.

I agree with this it would be classed as a special location eg agricultural and theres a few pages of regs that apply to that. Its not just people its animals involved.Section 705 in the regs books.
