Extractor Fan in loft gone wrong....

Ive had these weird spots appear of late on our en-suite bathroom ceiling.

I have since been into the loft to see the flexible ducting hose detached from the unit head, this could be causing the mould as the ventilation would have been cut off. Is this a simple case of re-attaching and carrying on with its use ? Or do I need to clean out the head unit ?

That fan certainly needs a good clean. Then re-attach the ducting. Make sure it's adequately supported and you should be back in business.

that mold is not untypical of a bathroom - even the best fan wont get rid of all moisture. Sure - it should be re-hosed (where does the hose go to?) but treat the mold with bleach on a cloth (dont get it in your eyes) and you should be good to go.

Ive tried to re-attach the ducting (it goes out up towards the roof), but it keeps springing off, duct tape is not the answer, it wraps around the end of the duct and not onto the head.

The other one in my main bathroom looks like the ducting is secured well past the plasterboard and kind of into the fan head unit.

Is there any particular way of attaching ducting to a fan head ?

DONT clean it- just 'bin' it. Fans like that take ages to even remove the odour from a womans fa*t.
(and we all know what they smell like).
Get a new fan- maybe one of those centrifugal fans from screwfix.

You can buy long cable ties which should do the job (your local shed will have them). The hose should be vented thru the roof via a special ventilating tile, not just into the roof space (while u are up there)

Yes, it goes through the loft space and out through the tiles.

Here is the blasted thing....you can see, ive not got much for the ducting to grab onto.

Remove those old fans and replace with these:

which have the motor as a separate unit fitted in the loft.
Far more powerful and much quieter.

Fit a rigid PVC elbow to the fan - and I would replace the flexi-pipe with rigid as well - this will give a firm fixing point.

I cant see me fitting that new fan, not that great at the DIY thing.

What size of elbow do I need ?

In that case I would go out and hire a specialist dust-removal expert , followed by a fan-fitting technician.
