Not sure what it is, but the standard of tradesmen has really hit new lows. I had a plumber who made a right mess, same with a tiler who spent more time outside smoking than on the job. Bad off cuts, and when you question them, they give you a bad attitude. I used to work in peoples houses doing odd jobs, and I was always friendly, polite and had respect for peoples property.

pay peanuts get monkeys
There's that. There's also a lot of chancers out there, they'll post pics of other people's work on social media, claim it as their own, get the job, have a stab at it, disappear with the cash. Forget the websites, there are good trades on them but the sites don't verify their work, online reviews are easily faked.
See if your local authority trading standards bunch run a Trusted Trader scheme (some do, they are far more reliable).
Do your due diligence- talk to neighbours, friends at work, mates down the pub. If you're dealing with a limited company, check their status on Companies House- find the directors names, search those names for other companies, CCJs etc. Yes it's all a time-consuming pain but a decent sized scheme can easily hit £50k, you really need to know who you're dealing with.
When you find good ones stick with them and pay what they ask.

Getting in electricians plumbers plasterers joiners etc etc is farcical. everything is palmed off , half arsed and half done . Get an all rounder to take responsibility for the whole room . You’ll have a better chance of a mint finish that don’t look half done and disjointed.

Clowns these days are more concerned in taking the money and running . Up to their eyeballs in mortgage and pcp payments.

Very true. Also you (the customer) have a single point of contact rather than playing pass the defect between a load of individuals
