Got a guy building a garage on a site, new bricks in 1:5 white pc/sand. He's not protected it that well as he's been building and the rain's got into it, so there are mortar runs on the face. Consequently it looks pants.

Best way of cleaning it?

diluted brick acid , just brush it on over the stains till it dissapears but at the same time quickly go over the whole lot and then hose it down, why didnt he cover it , i always cover my work at the end of the day normaly with a 2ft square piece of membrane if it might rain on a good day weather fine a tea towel lol

Thanks for that, what ratio acid to water? As for why he didn't, only he knows...

well i normaly make it weak , say 3/4 bucket of water and probaly two cups of brick acid bought from a builders merchants rather than b and q as theres wouldnt clean a tea stain, hey shy is there a catch at the end of this lol

Have it knocked down and rebuilt.

It will never come up neat, and will efflores for the next 100 years if it got soaked while building

And the white/light joints will be patchy and even dirty from the wash

Can hydrochloric acid be used on white cement?

Seems a bit harsh, Woody, it's only a garage, not a civic building! I know that it's likely to eff..efflor...effloure..have the salts coming out long time, but it's more to tidy it up, as best as can be done. If it was my barn, that would be a different matter!

As for using acid on white cement, we'll try a test round the back where it can't be seen and let you know :)

lol thats why woody looking for bargains on ebay all day and hasnt a clue about the building industry, hey woody how many building do you think have been built in white mortar and have had runs splash backs from each scaffold lift and been pulled down because of mortar marks, 1000s been built lol your so funny

I suppose that would depend on how many jobs you have worked on ....... zooooooming along the line throwing compo all over the place  (this calculation would not include your usual footings and manholes though)

I know, and the guys know too, what happens to poor, unacceptable work on my jobs

And for your benefit, footingsnottidy, stains caused by saturated mortar runs, are completely different and harder to deal with than those mortar splashes at each lift (which should not occur in the first place) double

I think FNT doesn't understand that, when we draw things up all nice and neat, we expect them to be built like that  .

Having said that, I can't get overly worried about a garage, especially as the client, bless her, likes the "rustic" appearance....

your jobs lol, so you another site agent who knows nothing he he i thought so by some of the answers you give

also engineering bricks can easily be cleaned with a rag with a drop of diesel on it :)

Sure you can use Linseed Oil too? IIRC

Was on cleaning duties one day and the site agent asked me if I was using Linseed Oil on the staffs, Yeah I replied as I keep brushing on the Disclean....
