I think the directions from Fernox say up to one week but the milder cleaners can generally be left for a couple of weeks. They work by loosening the deposits and holding them in suspension. If you don't flush it out of the system, it is just going to deposit again. If you use one of the more serious cleaners such as sentinel X800, you must flush it all out or it will destroy your heating pump and possibly other components.
