We have had a plug socket removed and there is now a hole in the wall..

How can we fix this hole?

Standard double plug socket hole, which is on an outside wall.

The electrics have been capped off and made safe.

If the backbox is still there you could just screw on a blank faceplate on it. Or you could fit a backbox and screw a faceplate on it.

If you want to fill it instead, it depends what the wall is. If it's brick and plaster you can apply some pva then fill the hole with bonding coat plaster. If it's really deep do it in layers. Finish just below the surface and do the last bit with some easy-to-sand plaster like fastset or similar, then sand it down to flush using a sanding block. Or you could affix a piece of wood or similar to the brick to fill some of the gap before you plaster.

If it's blockwork with gyproc dotted and dabbed on then you could slide a piece of thin plywood or hardboard inside the hole and screw it to the existing gyproc, then screw a new cutting of gyproc into the hole (onto the plywood), then fill the surface with fastset or similar as above.

Or you could try bodging it with some "one product does it all" type filler, which might work, but IMHO you won't get as good a finish.
