Hello guys... this is my first post here :)

I'm moving to another house where I will need to mount a floodlight in the garden, mount photos inside the house, mount a blind curtain in the bathroom and make a hole in the wall for the dish cable.

I will need a drill for that. I went to B&Q and found many kinds and features but don't know which one is good for me.
I also don't know what Bits I will need as I never had a drill before and also those plastic peices that go in the hole before the screw

A friend advised me to buy a cheap drill from the car boot market but again I don't know what I should be looking for.

I also have another question. The shower in the bathroom is a bit short, I mean when I stand in the bath, the shower head reaches my mouth level!! I'm thinking in buying a longer one to place it a bit higher.

So after I get the drill, how can I drill a hole in the wall without breaking the tiles in the bathroom?

Thanks a lot

It depends on how much money you would like to spend. But if funds allow i would say buy an 18volt cordless "combi" drill with at least 2 batterys and of a good make. Add to this a mains powered SDS plus drill for heavy duty masonary drilling like a 10mm hole in the wall for a dish cable.
If you are on a tight budget i would say buy a decent quality corded hammer drill with at least a 13mm chuck.
For drill bits i always use a 5.5mm for Red wallplugs and a 7mm for the brown plugs to pass a coaxial cable through the wall you will need a drill bit thats 10mm by 400mm long.
It can work out cheaper to buy drill bits in a set but always buy good quality as they will last longer and save you time.

This would probably suit you for a drill: http://www.screwfix.com/prods/85256...s/Bosch-PSB-550-RE-550W-Percussion-Drill-240V

It'll easily cope with normal wood, metal, and masonry work, and shouldn't have an issue putting a 10mm hole through a wall.

For bits, I can recommend these for masonry: http://www.screwfix.com/prods/88598...s/DeWalt-Extreme-2-Masonry-Drill-Bit-Set-5Pcs
Here's a long 10mm for getting through a wall: http://www.screwfix.com/prods/65938...onry/Erbauer-Pro-Masonry-Drill-Bit-10-x-400mm
These for wood and plasterboard: http://www.screwfix.com/prods/64247...ood-Sets/DeWalt-Brad-Point-Drill-Bit-Set-5-Pc
And a set of these for general use (wood, plasterboard, metal..): http://www.screwfix.com/prods/56241...-Sets/Erbauer-HSS-Titanium-Drill-Bit-Set-15Pc

'those plastic pieces' are called wall plugs. These are fine for pretty much any normal use in masonry and light use in plasterboard: http://www.screwfix.com/prods/18139/Fixings/Wall-Plugs/Wall-Plugs-Pack-of-600

As for drilling through tiles, I've never actually tried it, but I imagine just going slow with a masonry bit on non-hammer until you're through the tile would work.

Thanks a lot guys... you gave me a clear idea about it...thanks again :)

For drilling tiles i find sticking a bit of tape on first then using an ordinary drillbit to get through the glaze works fine

As I said, the cheap ones do perfectly fine most of the time. You just need to drill the right size hole, 6mm is too large for red ones. 5.5mm is ideal, 5mm is ok, but you often need to tap them in with a hammer.

Thats a good little drill for the money and will be more than enough for what you need

The Dewalt extreme drill bits are excellent i find the metal bits in the range very good for accurate drilling on centre and getting through hard material like stanless steel.
