Hello all,

I'm building a two storey extension at the fron of the house and have got to the point where we need to put in a steel that supports the new front wall of the 1st floor of the house.

The steel will span the entire width of the house and the top of it needs to be level with the floor joists in the extension which in turn need to be level with the floor joists in the existing house.

Just wanted to know if anybody can tell me the best way mark out the height at which the padstone should sit? The challenge is that the existing front wall of the house (which we need to keep) sits between the current joists and where the joists of the new extension will be.

What I've done so far is to cut a hole in the ceiling and measure down 1m from the top of the existing joists. Then I thought I can use a level to get a level line out the front door along the wall to under where the steel will go, before measuring back up 1m again to get the point where the top of the steel should be level with the existing joints.

I was then going to use a laser level to get the height for the other end of the steel on the opposite side of the house.

Sorry that's longwinded! Just wanted to check my theory on here.

Cheers,
