Hi all

Just looking into the possibility of a 4.8m x 4.4m extension on the side of the house at first floor level only.
The ground floor level would essentially be a car port with with openings at the front and back to allow me to drive my car through to a garage behind. I understand this may be called a ‘flying first floor extension’

Before I proceed to plans / getting an SE involved, just wanted to gain an understanding of feasibility.

My initial thinking would be to have a steel into the side of the house on a pad stone (one steel at the front and one at the back) and then have these supported at the other end on brick pillars on pad foundations. The cavity walls above would the be built off these steels.

The question I have is could this be done with a large steel on internal leaf and an 8mm plate welded underneath this to extend and take the external leaf, rather than having two steels bolted together? Reason being, to save having an unsightly steel on the external face?

Also, despite best efforts I have been unable to understand the design detail for the floor - would this be floor joists and the insulation added between these and then fire board below this (the bit that will be technically the roof of the car port) or will this need to be something more substantial?

Like mentioned, just want to gain a basic understanding before speaking with an SE to understand it a bit more in my own mind

Any guidance would be much appreciated

Many thanks
G

Yes. You will need to build in a cav' tray and weep vents etc. They are awkward bu66ers to lift though.

Thanks noseall much appreciated

Any suggestions on the finish/material for what would be the floor of the first floor / roof of the carport.

Many thanks

The floor and roof of the extension?

Floor - same as dwelling i.e. T&G (glued) flooring chipboard, ply or T&G pine floor boards. Thickness of flooring will depend on joist spacing.

Roof - flat or pitched?
