fitting a basin

We are fitting the waste to a basin, and from the sink is 32mm, and to the waste is 40mm, we bought a reducer but that doesnt seem to work, as there are 2 threads on the bottom, and not one that goes into another, hope that makes sense. helpppp we have no sink !!

Can't really picture what your on about, but if you reduce the 40mm waste pipe further back with a push fit coupling & put a push fit reducer into the other side of it then you wont have to reduce it at the basin.
