It is a struggle getting imperial, stranded cable into modern sockets.

As you now have them separated for Wago, worth trying again.

Or try different brand of socket. Do Crabtree have round terminal holes these days?

What with that massive single pattress hole in the rear ? Think that there is plenty of room

Double surface pattress over a single recessed one.

note sure how those braided cables will work in a wago connector - never done that in past

WAGO lever connectors, like the OP has are fine for solid, coarse stranded or fine-stranded wire.

Some models of WAGO push-in connectors are suitable for coarse stranded wire, others are only suitable for solid wire. Afaict none of the push-ins are suitable for fine stranded wire.
