fitting bath panel

i got a wood bath panel which was described as having a rebated edge to fit under the bath rim.Unfortunately the rebate is too thick to fit .How can i either make the wood thinner along its entire length or widen the space under the bath edge.its not very good timber and i'm worried about it being too weak when its done.

as tex mex says a routers a good option

how much of a "slot" do you have to slot the panel into[width]!!!!!!
and how thick is your panel !!!!!!!!!!
i am guessing 6mm and 18mm its fine to reduce 18 down to 6mm
