Misunderstanding...
the adjustment on the rod is for where the water lever stops when it refils. This is working fine.
The problem is, even after that, a small amount of water very very slowly still gets let in, so eventually the water level reaches the overflow. Like I say not a major problem, but not very economical on the wasted water.
