Hi all,

The wife has decided we're having white oak spindles and balustrade on the stairs she's also decided she wants the bottom newel post set back a couple of steps like below,

I've only ever done 1 balustrade in our old house and the newel post was at the the end so I drilled into the floor and fitted a zip bolt.

To set the newel post back I'm assuming I'll need to cut a section out of the centre of the newel to let it sit over the stringer then fit a zip bolt that has a screw thread in it to the stringer.

Would the newel post be strong enough fitted like that or is there another way a carpenter would do it?

Thanks,
Chris.

That's a poxy bodge and trip hazard. Probably done to mask that dangerous first step.

But yes, you'd form a [tight] mortice and slot it over the string. It could be glued and dowelled to secure it.

The pictures nothing to do with me just something I found showing similar to what she wants.

What's wrong with that first step?

you automatically tend to pivot at the newel and as you swing round not only is there no step and nose to give you a safe even path to the side you have a massive trip hazzard with the string crossing where the tread should be
