I've been asked to fit a PIR security light for friend. I've been to his house today to make sure there is a decent place to take a feed from and to be honest i'm struggling to find anywhere. The house is full of laminate flooring!!! The only place to take a feed from without ripping up his new laminate flooring is the lighting circuit in the loft.

Do you guys (and gals) come across this problem a lot?

yep.

wait untill they get a leak or othe problem downstais (under the floor)

I am of the opinion people have laminated floors to keep up with the jones's

there is nothig wrong with wiring the security light off the upstairs lighting circuit as long as it won overload the circuit.

depends on how many lights are already on the circuit is it a 6amp or 10amp mcb, and what sort of security light will it be ??

A socket on an external wall? Take a fused spur straight out the wall . . .

What about this....

Take a feed from the loop supplying the back bedroom. Run it outside in 1.5mm Hi-tuf cable to the height they want the light, which is about halfway. Then terminate the live into a 'choc block' with neutral and earth terminated in the light. Then run a switch cable down the outside wall back into the house and into a switch.

Is this feasible? This will stop any mess in the house, so will keep his missus happy. Also, he has natural brick so the cable wouldn't be as obvious as say a rendered house painted cream.

What do you think?

They have laminate flooring as an alternative to independent thought.

(See also: downlights, hot tubs, decking...)

This is his existing lighting circuit:

Potentially 2000W of existing lighting.
Therefore when applying diversity i get the following:
2000 x .66 = 1320
1320/230 = 5.7A

He has a 5a rewirable fuse protecting the circuit.

This is what he wants adding to the circuit:
2 x 500W PIR security lights
8 x dowlighters for the eaves/soffit.

This is another potential 1800W to add to the existing 2000w, 3800W in total. Even when applying diversity on the total potential load it comes out at just under 11A.

How would you tackle this?

Hi

Folllow craftys advice use a 13amp switched spur to supply the lighting off the upstairs ring main then as discussed put your switch cable on the outside in Conduit then drill in downstairs for the switch location, that easily covers your 11amp total load, i would also make sure sockets are on an rcd for extra protection for outside equipment.
