Some people i know are having their range cooker moved into the under stairs part of their kitchen.
The distance between the cooking surface and the ceil part of the under stairs is only 600mm.
They want spots fitting in this ceiling part. Would that be ok?
Isn't 600mm a bit short a distance for the cooking?
They say kicthen fitting company disgnedit, but thought i'd double check for them.
Can lights be installed? Do they have to be a special fitting, ie fire rated?

I would have thought extraction would be a bigger problem than lighting, but I agree with you that it does not sound like a suitable siting!!

I always use fire rated fittings in a kitchen but thats just me. I'd use IP44 fittings so steam etc doesnt get sucked up into the ceiling void.
Halogen fittings run bery hot in any case but I'd be more concerned that the chefs head will get singed by the halogen light. Check out min distance from lamp to surface on the lamp/fitting info.

LED or cfl maybe a suitable solution for this??

i didnt think IP44 woul stop steam, wouldnt you need more like IP67?

but as has been said extraction is what you need to look at, and extractors come with lights!

All you need do is steal a peek at a cooker hood installation manual. They will tell you the minimum distance between hob surface & hood surface & the IP rating of the hood. That'll give you a good idea.

If they're right above the cooker, won't they end up getting covered in s$%t from steam, smoke etc.? Not casting aspersions on their cooking/cleaning ability, but...
