FITTING TRELLIS TO FENCE

We have just bought a house and the neighbour directly behind us has a higher garden with a trapoline which looks directly into our garden so we have very little privacy in our back garden. We asked the neighbour if they could move the trampoline away from the fence but they have not and the kids shout over the fence and throw rubbish.
We want to attach approx 1ft - 2ft of trellis to the top of our side of the fence. we believe that we own the fence as our house was built before theirs and we have the smooth more attractive side of the fence.
The problem is that the neighbour is not happy about the trellis as their garden is wider than ours and overlaps with both neighbours either side of us so the trellis would not go all the way across their fence, so unless all 3 of the houses that they share their garden fence with put up trellis also, their side of the fence will only be partly 'trellis-ed'. Are within our rights to put the trellis up regardless? please help. thanks v much

Well you should really know whose fence it is, but in any case, a litle bit of trellis won't do any harm, and if it turns out it's theirs and they complain, then it's an easy job to remove.

If that is the case then you can put your own fence up with trellis attached just inside your garden. Brushwood or bamboo screening is another option.

Just because you have the 'nice side' doesn't indicate that it's yours. It's considered good practice to give the neighbours the good side if it's your fence.

If it is your fence and they are not happy with it then take it down and start throwing rubbish in their garden, see how they like it.

Did you not notice this during your viewing of the property prior to buying it? If you are sure the fence is your then I cant see a problem.

That aside, have you spoken to them about your concerns about privacy, kids shouting and rubbish so they know why you want to put the trellis up? A foot or 2 doesn't sound much, but invariably doing something that cheeses your neighbour off only leads to a continuous bad feeling which is never good..

if there are any problems then you can put up a trellis on your side, supported on its own posts, seperate to their fence.
