Hi
I need urgent help here, tomorrow i have to fix my back gate. In order to do this i need to fix a bit of timber to a brick wall and was wondering the best way.

Basically I cannot hang the gate on the brick wall because it needs bridgine therefore i need a timber attached to the brick wayy and then hang the gate off of that.

What i want to do is secure a peice of timber (4x4) or maybe 3x3 to the brick but have no idea how to fix it, obviously i need to drill the wall but not sure of the fixings (frame fixings, rawlbolts etc). The gate is timber so it is quite heavy.

Need to know the size and type of fixings, help please :)

youll be better off using a 4 x 2 as a wall plate on the side fixed to teh brick where the hinges will be as you will get a stronger fixing, as the gate puts a lot of load on the wall plate. put at least 3 fixings in. we normally use 130mm long.

Right, i bought some ralwbolts big enough to go into the brick and fix the wallplate to it ie going throught the timber and into the brick.

Problem i have is the gap between where the 4x2 and the gate post is quite big (not too sure of the distance but likely to be about 8in or so).

Would it be possible to secure the 4x2 to the brick and then secure the post onto that? If so, what fixings should i be using ?

Thinking about this the most obvious way to do this would be to get some timber that would bridge the gap and drill through this and into the brick and then hang the gate off of that but not sure i can get a fixing that long.

The only way i can see fixing this one is to fix the 4x2 to the brick, then fix a post to the 4x2 using some sort of fixing and then another post onto that post using the same fixing, bit of a nightmare because the wall is short.
