Hi,
Need to fix a newal post to a exsisting post which has been cut below the step ,from picture you can see it has been cut really low.Has anybody got any idea's of fixings to use to join the old and new together.Otherwise I'll expect I need to take old one out and replace the complete post.

Thanks

I'd cut back the white painted exsisting piece to the face of the riser currently carpeted. Looking at it this will probably be about an inch and a bit. This will give you a clean face with no joint line and also a large gluing area. Then with the exsisting piece cut off square at the top I'd cut a mortise hole into it. This only needs to be an inch or so as its purpose is to help stop twisting. Then cut the mirror image of the exsisting post into the bottom of the new post and fit together. There will probably be a small amount of fiddling to get it perfect but that's to be expected.
As to fixing , if it's painted then glue and screwthrough that long front face and fill. Stained wood can be done the same but the screws are pelleted or it can be glued and cramped alone if wished.
Forgot to say before gluing in place mark and cut any mortise for the handrail and fit it at the same time.
